Summary of Phenotype
Results of this report are primarily descriptive and represent the analysis of one mutant mouse. They should therefore be interpreted with caution and as preliminary, observation-generating data.
Anecdotally, BMB17 mutant mice been reported to have sperm heads with no tails. In this study, diffuse aspermia and scattered germinal testicular epithelial degeneration, moderate preputial gland acinar atrophy with diffuse ductal ectasia, and bulbourethral gland metaplasia/atrophy with abnormal mucin production were identified. No other significant phenotype abnormalities were identified.
Summary - Gross Findings
No gross lesions were observed in the control or mutant.

Summary - Histology
The mutant had diffuse aspermia (no mature sperm in the tubular lumens) in the testes and epididymis. While most seminiferous tubules had normal appearing germ cells including spermatogonia, primary and secondary spermatocytes, and spermatids, a few scattered tubules had mild to marked germinal epithelial degeneration.
There was moderate acinar atrophy with diffuse ductal ectasia in the preputial glands. The bulbourethral gland had acinar epithelial metaplasia/atrophy and did not stain with Alcian Blue and only half of the acini stained positively for PAS. In contrast, the bulbourethral gland of the control animal stained Alcian Blue positive (acidic mucins) and PAS positive (neutral mucins). This suggests that the bulbourethral gland of the mutant had decreased and altered mucin product.
